It’s been a busy few weeks for Felukah who, in addition to dropping the first taste of her next album, also released a track as part of a campaign by an NGO fighting for justice for Muslim women. The New York-based artist is set to release her second studio album, Dream 23, on UAE-based label Abu Recordings this July and the second track comes in the form of ‘Apocalypse’.
“If this is really the apocalypse, I plan to make some pottery,” the Egyptian artist raps in the opening lines of a sombre song whose tone is carried by an uncluttered and meandering melody. As a whole, it takes Felukah a little bit further towards the neo-soul production that stood out on 2019 LP, Citadel, though maintains a similarly dreamy sonic signature of the album’s lead single, ‘22+1’, which looks like it will be one of the hallmarks of the album.
"The concept is the idea of circling around the sun 23 times and paying homage to both Egyptian roots and New York culture with each turn around the sun," she explained of the album. “The album lyrically and sonically explores space in the first half and earth in the other, validating the dream world and the real world equally. It is split in so many ways: sonically, culturally and spiritually.”
In addition to that first single, June also saw Felukah take part in a special project with global NGO, Musawah, an advocate for Muslim women’s rights, particulate when it comes to Islamic family law. ‘Mish Hastanna’ saw the artist rap and sing in Arabic, while Dubai-based artist, Rama Duwaji, animated an accompanying video.
