Cairo-based rapper, Abo El Anwar, first garnered attention from the masses after working with fellow Egyptian rapper, Abyusif, on ‘Basha E3temed’ in 2019. Since then, however, he has been building a bigger and bigger fanbase, which he has gifted not one, but two EPs. Faqret El Sahel and El Karta tick all the right boxes in terms of delivering the playful sound, clever wordplay and wit that we’ve come to expect from the rapper, with some deep thought seeping through, too/
El Karta is largely centred around humour and anecdotes, at times points the rapper seems to be going off on a tangent. But in also happily poking fun at himself, it all somehow works, even against tracks featuring aggressive beats.
Faqret El Sahel experiments more with a shaabi and mahraganat-inspired sound and with seemingly exaggerated autotune at points. The second track, ‘Etghyrna’, sees the rapper’s lyrics painted in a more serious tone, as he ponders the loss of a relationship. This EP is quite diverse in that it demonstrates different influences or types of sound, whereas El Karta is much more consistent throughout, delivering what fans of the rapper would expect.
