Egyptian singer-songwriter and Cairo-based future-pop imprint SLOVVDK affiliate Yosr has maintained a relatively low profile since her debut single ‘KEEP’, and subsequent appearance on SLOVVDK’s MIXTAPE II.

‘Kalam’, produced by Malik El Messiry, sees Yosr’s lo-fi dream pop take a mellow turn into more downtempo speeds, switching up the thumping drum programming and high-key synth work of ‘KEEP’ for the soft pitter-patter of wooden percussion and a deep bass synthesizer riff holding down the rhythmic duties, and fluttering synths echoing behind a smooth guitar lead melody.

Yosr effortlessly transitions between lovesick verses in both English and Arabic, showing a masterful control of tone and flow across both languages, and lyrically the song more often than not hits like a folk song rather than a pop-anthem, though this isn't a bad thing by any means. From a production standpoint, a clearly distinguishable musical evolution can be heard on ‘Kalam’ compared to Yosr’s previous work, with the mix coming through with surprising clarity and the production elements seeming to be placed more intentionally than exploratorily.
