Wet Silhouette Channels Avant Rock Rage on 'The Virgin's Ballade'

Beirut-based trio Wet Silhouette have released ‘The Virgin’s Ballade’, a poetic, forthright exploration of rage, grief and love rooted in the free-form sessions that first brought the band together in the winter of 2024.

The three-generational experimental trio, made up of drummer Anthony Tawil, bassist Ziad Moukarzel and vocalist Claudia Khachan, began playing together in Beirut amid a period of heightened political unrest and Israeli attacks on the city. What began as an improvised session gradually became a way of processing emotions that were difficult to articulate otherwise.

Built around improvisation and avant-rock, ‘The Virgin’s Ballade’ sidesteps conventional song structures, moving between sparse acoustic passages, hazy ambient textures, restless rhythms and heavier bursts of noisy distortion, rather than forcing these elements into a fixed shape, Wet Silhouette allow the music to shift according to the tension between the three players.

The track took shape through extended studio sessions, where the band refined their recordings without sanding away the spontaneity, and improvisational nature of the original performances. The arrangements leave enough space for the musicians to react to one another in real time, with changes in intensity and texture becoming part of the composition itself.

At the centre of the track is Claudia. Her vocals moves between skyscrapping purity and a fragile, breathy husk before breaking into sharper, elegiac cries, which a rather fitting delivery for her cryptic lyricism, shifting metaphors that resists simple interpretation. Her keys also deepen the track’s atmospheric and emotional pull, while Tawil’s drums begin with a subdued, almost lulling pattern before unfurling into intricate polyrhythms that steadily heighten the tension. Beneath it all, Moukarzel’s bass riffs provides a shifting harmonic foundation, moving through broken chords, measured notes and low, rumbling tones.

As the first preview single from the band’s upcoming debut album, ‘The Virgin’s Ballade’ is an unfiltered introduction to to an emerging independent band with a refreshing approach to songwriting and rock music.
