Amro El Meligy Turns Heavy Moments Into Playful Pop 'Ana Etghayart'

Amro El Meligy has changed - that’s the literal statement that the Egyptian singer-songwriter is making with his third studio album, Ana Etghayart (I Have Changed). The 10-track record finds him moving into a more personal and musically adventurous phase, while processing difficult emotions with a commendably  upbeat spirit.

Written and composed entirely by El Meligy, with all tracks arranged by Sherif El Wesseimy, the album moves between Arabic, English and, for the first time, French. It follows Hangin’ There, which became a Virgin Megastore bestseller, and El Hafla, which produced fan-favourite radio hit ‘Baros’.

Describing the album as “playful but dark,” El Meligy transforms emotional baggage into pop and dance-inspired production. “I wanted to share real stories that happened to me, but present them in a light, musical way,” he explains. “Even when the subject is heavy, I wanted the music to make people feel like they can dance through it.”

That tension between emotional weight and musical release runs through Ana Etghayart. The album’s lead single, ‘Wala Mara Had Sa’al’, is the most direct confrontation with vulnerability, exploring the feeling left behind. “I’ve struggled with abandonment issues for most of my life,” El Meligy says. “It took me until this point to find the strength to speak about it openly and share that part of myself with the world.”

Elsewhere,‘Etkhabat’ is a high-energy pop track built around the carefree spirit of a younger generation, while ‘El Naharda Farah’ takes the fairly devastating experience of watching the love of your life marry someone else.

Tracks like ‘Ashaartiny’ and ‘Ghayart Enwany’ continue El Meligy’s established blend of storytelling and dance-pop, while ‘Nos Nooma’ brings the album to one of its most intimate points. Driven by haunting violin arrangements, the track captures a very specific uneasy silence between two people who no longer know what to make of their relationship.

Taken as a whole, Ana Etghayart is less a dramatic reinvention of an artist, and more a snapshot of that artist in motion. The songs are personal, but rarely solemn; emotionally open, but still built to move.
