Album Spotlight: Tawsen - Chokran
Tawsen breaks down his album ‘Chokran,’ blending high-energy dance beats with raw melancholy and deep gratitude.
For Moroccan-Belgian artist Tawsen, few things in music hit quite as hard as the contrast between a high-energy dance beat and deeply melancholic lyrics. On his 15-track album Chokran, this is the exact friction he leans heavily into. Marking a major shift in his career, one that is defined by independence and experimentation, the record serves as both a vibrant celebration of how far Tawsen has come, and an honest look at how he got to where he is today.
In this SceneNoise interview, Tawsen explains that the core of the album is rooted in gratitude. Crafting a full-length project centered around this theme pushed him to dig deep into his life over the past three years, translating his personal reflections into a balanced, positive body of work.
Musically, Chokran thrives on a total lack of rigid planning. Instead of locking himself into one genre, Tawsen took a hands-on approach in the studio, simply tuning into the energy of his producers and friends. This freedom allowed him to push boundaries, resulting in a diverse sonic palette where he sings in Darija over everything from country-style acoustic backdrops to synth-heavy electro tracks.
Rather than chasing big names for industry clout, Tawsen selected features based purely on raw chemistry. Whether reaching out to longtime friends or cold-messaging bedroom artists he stumbled across on YouTube, he let the music speak first. This organic process brought together a stellar lineup, including Inez on ‘Anani', Ayoub Anbaoui on the driving track ‘Dawini', Maestro on ‘Nsayni', Fares Sokar on ‘Estanna', and Sabah on ‘Mitad'.
