'Wings Over Wires' Comp. Turns Gazan Defiance into Electronic Echoes
A viral moment from Gaza showing the founder of a musical support group harmonising with children to the sound of a drone has become an album of solidarity and defiance.
In the summer of 2025, a video of Ahmed Muin Abu Amsha went viral for reasons that were as heartbreaking as they were profound. Abu Amsha, the founder of the Gaza Birds Singing musical support group, was filmed leading a group of students in a vocal exercise. As a drone buzzed overhead, he identified its mechanical hum as a B-flat and led his students to harmonise over it.
That moment of resilience has now blossomed into ‘Wings Over Wires', a sprawling 14-track electronic compilation released via Marseille-based label, Gros Oeuvre that sees artists from across the Arab world using that singular, haunting vocal sample as their foundation.
The project began with producer Hmenou, who found himself paralysed by the original video. What started as a personal UK dubstep remix soon evolved into a cross-border mission. After connecting with Abu Amsha to ensure the work was handled with the necessary weight and respect, Hmenou teamed up with Metttani - the Tunisian visionary behind Arabstazy and Shouka - to expand the concept into a collective statement.
The result is a musical dialogue between the SWANA underground and the reality on the ground in Gaza. Across the compilation, the student’s harmonies are recontextualised through deep dub, experimental bass and ambient textures. Beyond using it as a sample, each artist approaches the moment as a shared mission that turns Abu Amsha’s work from a fleeting social media moment into a permanent cultural artifact.
All proceeds from ‘Wings Over Wires' are directed toward Gaza Birds Singing, supporting Abu Amsha and his colleagues as they continue to provide sanctuary for Palestinian children through music.
