Egypt's First Official 'National Day of Music' is on September 15th

In memory of the passing of Egypt’s first musician, Sayed Darwish, Egypt's Ministry of Culture has declared September 15th as the nation’s first official music day.

The celebrations of Egypt's National Day of Music will feature more than 100 events and activations happening simultaneously across 80 cultural hubs nationwide. The events include live performances, seminars, art exhibitions, book fairs and free entry to art museums.

The flagship celebration, however, will take place at the Cairo Opera House, featuring tributes to some of Egypt’s most influential musicians and the revival of the classic operetta, ‘El Leila El Kebira’, alongside sets from local independent artists and folk ensembles. 

Egyptian legendary composer Omar Khairat has penned an official statement to be broadcast across cultural institutions nationwide, a symbolic message underscoring the role of music in shaping collective consciousness.

In 2023, we sat down with renowned composer and musician Hany Shenouda, following a panel he led about the legacy of Sheikh Sayed Darwish. He shared with us how Darwish’s music came to represent more than a shift in the Egyptian music scene, but a shift in culture, and how, to this day, every brave decision made outside the norm of the local music scene can be seen as a ripple of the splash Darwish made.

أعلنت وزارة الثقافة أنّ يوم الإثنين 15 سبتمبر، سيشهد الاحتفال بـ “اليوم المصري للموسيقى”، كحدث سنوي يقام تحت شعار “مصر بتتكلم موسيقى”، وذلك إحياءً لذكرى رحيل فنان الشعب سيد درويش.

وتتضمن احتفالية هذا العام أكثر من 100 فعالية تُقام في نحو 80 موقعًا ثقافيًا بمختلف المحافظات، وتشمل حفلات موسيقية، وعروضًا فنية، ومعارض كتب وفن تشكيلي، إلى جانب فتح المتاحف للجمهور مجانًا.

أما الحفل الرئيسي، فيُقام بدار الأوبرا المصرية، ويتخلله تكريم عدد من الرموز الموسيقية، وتقديم أوبريت الليلة الكبيرة، إضافةً إلى عروض لفرق مستقلة وشعبية.

وقد كتب الموسيقار عمر خيرت الكلمة الرسمية لهذه المناسبة، التي ستُذاع في جميع المواقع الثقافية كرسالة رمزية تؤكد قيمة الموسيقى في وجدان المصريين ودورها في صياغة الوعي الجمعي.

ويأتي تحديد هذا اليوم ليكون مناسبة سنوية تهدف إلى ترسيخ دور الموسيقى كأحد ركائز الهوية الوطنية المصرية.
