Jordanian Producer Mishmish Debuts With Grungy Dream Pop Single Bayez
The track reframes dream pop through 90s grungy textures to explore the push-and-pull of situationships.
Amman-based artist mishmish has unveiled her debut single, ‘bayez’, a poised introduction that balances nostalgia with experimentation. The track reframes pop through a gauzy dream-pop lens, weaving hazy textures and melodic hooks with murmured, reverb-soaked vocals, distorted guitar lines, and the inward-looking spirit of ’90s grunge.
The production is intricate yet restrained, drifting towards the atmospheric melancholy of Cocteau Twins-era dreamgaze, conjuring a sonic landscape that floats in between the states of sleeping and waking. mishmish’s Arabic lyrics are simple, yet intimate and deeply evocative, tracing the push-and-pull of yearning and emotional withdrawal, built around three looping phrases that mirror the hyperfixation and nonchalance at the heart of a typical situationship.
Directed by Zayd Lahham and shot by Sna Al Sharif in collaboration with Jordan’s Ward Productions, the accompanying music video extends this sense of emotional suspension. Through lo-fi, vintage-tinged visuals of mishmish drifting through Cairo, twirling in the streets, lingering on pedestrian bridges, or racing up and down escalators, the video captures the compulsive, cyclical nature of emotional spirals.
Marking her official debut release after years of scattered demos living on her SoundCloud, ‘bayez’ sees the rising artist making a great first impression, demonstrating her artistic range, not only as a producer but also as a singer and songwriter - positioning her as a potential steady voice subtly on the rise in the region’s independent music scene.
