Yonyo Turns Relationship Distress into Y2K Pop on New EP ‘Kalemny’

With his latest EP Kalemny, Egyptian artist Yonyo delivers a five-track study in romantic turbulence, wrapping the full arc of an unraveling relationship inside glossy, 2000s-inspired pop production. Rather than leaning on a heavy-handed concept, the project moves organically through the emotional stages of a breakup: from quiet anxiety and self-isolation to bargaining, infatuation, and, ultimately, direct confrontation.

Opening track ‘Law Leila’ establishes the record’s sonic signature early, weaving bright electric piano and warm synth lines around a central oud melody. As the drums drop, Yonyo’s smooth delivery anchors a slow-burning yet danceable groove that mirrors his dread of growing emotional distance. That introspective tone sharpens on ‘Bas2al Nafsy’, which pivots toward a punchier pop arrangement driven by acoustic guitars, a heavy bassline, and sweeping background strings. Here, Yonyo shifts to shorter, rhythmic vocal phrases to convey the pull between needing solitude and confronting heartbreak.

The mid-section ushers in a buoyant change of pace. ‘Beny w Benak’ lifts the mood with catchy lead synths and bright plucks, providing a fluffy backdrop for Yonyo to bargain for just one more night, confessing his reluctance to move on. That momentum carries into ‘Kol El Ayam’, where funky electric guitars trade space with a hard-hitting shaabi rhythm. Egyptian artist Tag joins for a smooth feature to tackle infatuation and devotion, clearing the runway for Yonyo’s flirty, high-energy vocals about being tongue-tied in front of someone he’s falling for.

The project closes on its most assertive note with the title track, ‘Kalemny’. Built over a resonant, bouncy synth bassline, the song sees Yonyo trade the vulnerability of earlier tracks for straight-up confrontation. Aimed at a partner acting above him, he contrasts his open-handed nature with their emotional detachment, bringing the EP to a sharp, energetic finish.

في منتصف المشروع، يتغير الإيقاع نحو مساحة أكثر خفة وحيوية. ترفع "بيني وبينك" المزاج من خلال سينثات رئيسية جذابة لتوفر خلفية خفيفة يفاوض يونيّو من خلالها على ليلة واحدة إضافية، معترفًا بعدم استعداده للمضي قدمًا. ويستمر هذا الزخم في "كل الأيام"، حيث تتبادل الجيتارات الكهربائية ذات الطابع الـFunky المساحة مع إيقاع شعبي قوي. وينضم الفنان المصري تاج في ظهور سلس يتناول الافتتان والتعلق، ممهدًا الطريق لأداء يونيّو المرح والمفعم بالطاقة، وهو يغني عن حالة الارتباك التي تصيبه أمام شخص بدأ في الوقوع في حبه.

يختتم المشروع بأكثر لحظاته حسمًا عبر التراك الرئيسي "كلمني". تقوم الأغنية على خط سينث باس نابض وذو حضور واضح، بينما يتخلى يونيّو عن هشاشة التراكات السابقة لصالح مواجهة مباشرة. يخاطب شريكًا يتعامل معه من موقع أعلى، ويضع طبيعته المنفتحة والعطاء في مواجهة برود الطرف الآخر وانفصاله العاطفي، لينهي الـEP بطاقة حادة ومباشرة.
