Just a few weeks after releasing her spectacular experimental-dance EP, Malign/Benign, Lebanese veteran, Liliane Chlela, has put out a fittingly pulsating and downright insane video for one of the EP’s track, ‘2022’. Produced by the Florence-based Polarys Collective - 3D animation by Ruggero Lupo Mengoni, art direction by Yasmine Saliba and Ruggero Lupo Mengoni - the video shows what can only be described as some kind of nightmarish rave in a dystopia ruled by AI and machines.
A mechanical, arachnid DJ/performer provides the music and is even joined by a partially-muscled skeleton groupie inside some kind of small laboratory or hangar. As the track’s intricate drum patterns and high-pitched instrumentals begin to peak, the scene transforms into a wet, rocky wasteland that looks like it hasn’t been touched by the sun in decades, maybe even centuries. There, a handful of socially-distanced, gilded, anthropomorphic beings take part in the age-old tradition of moving limbs to music, led by an Amazonian disco queen – possibly a different form of the incorporeal being that gave sentience to the DJ. Check it out.
