Azadi Reimagines Kafka’s Metamorphosis in Glam Rock Single ‘Sarsour’

France-based Tunisian artist and guitarist Azadi draws on Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis for ‘Sarsour’, a glam-rock take on the classic tale of existential dread. Fusing laid-back funk and psychedelic rock structures with French and Arabic lyrics, the self-taught artist channels the uncanny reality of a sudden shift, narrating a surreal descent into becoming a cockroach. Beneath the track's playful, jaunty charm lies a deeper narrative of shedding an old existence to claim self-affirmation through the deliberately unsettling motif.

Opening with a hypnotic, effect-laden guitar riff that drifts through a psychedelic haze, the track builds an eerie calm before launching into dense vocal harmonies. Rather than settling into a predictable groove, the song pivots around a dizzying piano motif that wanders across a grounded tonal center, setting up a vibrant instrumental break where punchy guitar chords and piano melodies lock in step.

Collaborating with indie veteran Zeid Hamdan - who handles bass, backing vocals, and production - Azadi balances raw, homegrown grit with sophisticated movement. As the track progresses, sweeping string arrangements gradually swell into the mix, giving the raw guitar lines a lush, theatrical backdrop. By pairing simple yet puzzling melodies with a rough-around-the-edges aesthetic, ‘Sarsour’ turns a moment of deep alienation into a captivating anthem.
