Verses of the Month is our new series highlighting the best rap performances from across the region. The series focuses on technical skill, flows, songwriting, diverse rhymes and impressive delivery. We aim to be highly selective, shining a light only on standout verses that showcase the rapper’s technical prowess while ensuring a good overall sound.

The series kicks off with a selection of verses that are predominantly from the Egyptian scene, which saw a flood of releases throughout July. This edition features beloved artist Lege-Cy returning to pure rapping, after going through a phase in which he slowed down and embraced a more intimate and alternative approach to hip-hop. Lege-Cy reaffirms his position as one of the best rappers in the game with witty bars and enigmatic one-liners. He throws shade on the scene, flexes his influence on peers, and promises a strong comeback in the near future.

Also included in this edition is a verse that stirred the Egyptian scene: the third verse from Afroto and Marwan Moussa on their latest collab ‘MONW3AT 2019’ from Afroto’s debut full-length LP. The lyric features Afroto and Moussa name-dropping nearly every rapper in the game in a fun and quirky manner, taking direct shots at styles, certain tracks, and approaches of the scene’s most influential names.

Last but not least is the first verse from Marwan Moussa’s latest single ‘3amel Eh,’ where Marwan returns to an early point in his career with introspective songwriting and poignant lyrics. He discusses personal struggles and dealing with an industry that tries to exploit him. The verse is well-written in terms of schemes, and how the bars flow to paint Marwan’s thoughts and contemplations.
