Saudi-based artist, fulana continues to push forward her emotive and eloquent sound, with moody atmospheres and a good dose of electronica and intricate sound design in her latest track, ‘Reprobate’.

Rooted in the Jeddah scene, fulana started writing and producing songs in the time between 2007-2010. But it was her 2016 single, ‘Everything & Nothing’ that earned her a space in the limelight for the first time, as she honed in on her self-contained electronic music compositions and stunning vocals.

In her recent release, ‘Reprobate’, fulana finds an even fresher and more focused sound with music driven by atmospheric pads, and a breakbeat driving the groove. Vocally, fulana presents her moody and melancholic singing style, in character with the lyrics that describe a dysfunctional relationship.

With lines like “I am your favourite curse, and all the words in between, poetic and profane..” and later “I am your pure denial, the ignorance in your mind, whenever I walk by..” The toxicity of the relationship in question is mirrored in the creeping, menacing sub-bass.

The production on the song is crisp, showing confidence through restraint and a relatively spacey mix, following in the footsteps of her 2022 release ‘Ghosts’, which had a similarly minimalistic sonic aesthetic. The song’s arrangement features only a handful of elements that are well utilized to achieve the song’s climax, which introduces only a soaring synth line, along with the drum part which becomes more bustling and loud as the track progresses.

The additional production from Amgad Shahrour, the bassist in the famed Jordanian band, Hayajan. The track was mixed and mastered by fulana’s label, Wall of Sound, which all contribute towards bringing to life the artist’s vision. The final result is cohesive, lush, and full of colour.
