Syrian Rapper Bu Kolthoum Serves Smooth and Sombre Soul in Latest Track ‘Ma Ba’ref'
The Amsterdam-based artist's new piece is at the other end of the spectrum compared to his previous ‘traditional’ hip-hop track, ‘Nujoum’.

Syrian rapper and producer, Bu Kolthoum, continues his foray away from the more aggressive rap that put him on the map and towards a softer soul sound with his new track, ‘Ma Ba’ref’.
Like previous hit releases,, 'Zamilou' and 'Wallé', the Amsterdam-based artist has put together a track that seamlessly combines minimalist soul and hip-hop. The lo-fi-licked production utilises wind and keyboard sounds that, coupled with ambient backing vocals, come together to form something that’s simultaneously chill and subtly emotive. While Bu Kolthoum has on occasion straddled the line between singing and rapping, this one sees him commit to the former, delivering rough, gravely vocals that retain the aura of his more traditional rapping. <iframe width="800" height="450" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QUsYKJ8pJ2M" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> ‘Ma Ba’ref marks marks his second release this month, following the more ‘traditional’ hip-hop track, ‘Nujoum’.
