‘Mirror for the Sun’ marks the beginning of an annual series of compilations released via Levantine label Souq, who dropped the 14-track compilation on Beatport and Bandcamp earlier this month. Compiled by Canada-based DJ and curator Niki Sadeki, A Mirror for the Sun is less a “geographical” exploration tied to highlighting sounds from one region of the world (as previous souq releases were), and more of a global journey spanning numerous countries, cultures, and influences.
The compilation features a selection of tracks from Souq friends and affiliates Niju, Madmotormiquel, Gesplantes Nichtsun, Zuma dionys, Andreas Balicki, Landhouse, Geju, El Mundo & Zazou, Anuman, Krink, Herrhausen & Treindl, Kapoor & Hvitling, Landikhan & MoM, and Y.LOH.
A result of such an extensive lineup is an extremely genre-varied experience that touches on organic house, dub-techno, downtempo, melodic techno, deeptech, as well as many other genres in between, with particular track highlights including the surging dark techno of Krink’s ‘Flowing River’, Y.LOH’s orchestrally-tinged ‘Aire’, and Geju’s sublimely percussive ‘French Press’, which punctuated the midpoint of the compilations runtime.
With many more compilations slated for release over the coming years, Souq plans on “shedding it’s skin and renewing itself along the way”, evolving into new sonic directions.
