Jana Delivers a Sleek & Bass-Heavy Sound on New EP ‘Khazan A7zan’

Egyptian producer, DJ and guitarist Jana operates in a space where drum & bass, breakbeat and hip-hop intersect with modern Arabic electronic experimentation. On her latest project, 'Khazan A7zan', she presents a compact, production-driven three-track EP that relies on contrast and structural friction rather than flashy embellishments or overstatement.

The instrumentation across the project is anchored by a sharp dynamic between a heavy low-end holding the beats in place and bright, metallic sound design floating freely above. Jana uses processed vocal takes, stuttered edits, and sudden rhythmic switch-ups to move the tracks forward, often allowing a song's established momentum to destabilize mid-way through. It is a deliberate sound palette that gives the project a sleek, chrome-like aesthetic while making room for dark, unexpected shifts.

The record opens with ‘Zahab La Rogoo3’ (featuring Zaf), which establishes this reflective atmosphere. Built over a slow trap framework, the track pairs massive 808s and spacious pads with glistening, ascending synth lines. Zaf’s heavily processed vocals drift through the mix until a beat switch midway through upends the track’s trajectory. The rhythm shifts into Arabic-inspired territory while the vocals drop an octave and stretch out to half-speed, pulling the initial shine down into a murky groove.

‘El 7ob’ follows with a more patient, layered build, featuring Umi on co-production and Nada Abbas on vocals. It begins quietly with a mellow organ progression and minimalist drum machine percussion, creating a subdued backdrop for Nada Abbas’s eerie topline and punctuating bell hits. Jana steadily increases the density through vocal stutters and chop edits until layers of metallic percussion, electronic accents, and a hefty Reese bass join an Arabic drum beat in the drop.

The project closes with ‘Temps’, a collaboration with pink satan that feels like the EP’s most anthemic moment. Driven by a catchy bassline, bright key motifs, and fast-moving arpeggios, the track establishes a driving pace up to the second-half shift, where the entire instrumental is slowed, pitched down, and submerged in reverb, leaving the project to settle into a spacious finish.
