Frequency is SceneNoise’s monthly editorial playlist focusing on the vast world of electronic music coming out of the MENA region, bringing you releases from across house, techno, downtempo, industrial, and experimental music released between September and October.

This month, our selection features Palestinian techno legend Sama' Abdulhadi, who collaborated with pioneering Palestinian artist and member of the shamstep group 47 Soul, Walaa Sbait. You can catch their track ‘Well Fee’ on this edition of Frequency, where the fast-paced rhythm of the song is contrasted with gentle percussions and atmospheric pads, over which intricate rhythmic fills, along with Sbait’s manipulated vocals, work to emphasize the groove over a constantly pounding kick drum.

We also heard from acclaimed Egyptian producer Fulltone, whose latest release ‘Till My Baby Gets Back’ goes from a laid-back drum groove, where interesting rhythms arise from individual drum sounds moving around the steady core of the pattern, to a rising wash of atmospheric sounds and effects that are put to a halt with the stipped down and crystal-clear drop, where a wide, filter-swept bassline takes center stage.

Meanwhile, Lebanese-Australian DJ Plead released his clap heavy remix of Vv Pete’s ‘Frauds’, where hard-hitting acoustic drum sounds, claps, and metallic percussions are laced with subtle glitches, subdued Duduk trills, and highly active sub patterns, making for a maximalist yet faint arrangement that reenforces the central, commanding vocal performance.
