In the second episode of SceneNoise's original series documenting Egypt's emerging new wave of rappers, we put the spotlight on disruptive Alexandrian rapper Wegz.
Hailing from El Wardian neighborhood, Wegz’s life turned upside down following the release of his breakout track “T.N.T” in the first quarter of 2018 paving the way for an evolution of Arabic trap music, before collaborating with mahraganat superstar Sadat on hit single 'Kharban'. It reached nearly 10 million plays on youtube and gave a strong hint that maybe the near future of Egyptian popular music lies in the cross-section between hip hop and shaabi which we'll explore further in episode three.
Wegz now maintains a steady stream of releases to stay on top of his game, showcasing his unique ability to conjure up complex rhymes with sophisticated metaphors and catchy melodies, while keeping his mind open to new collaborations whenever they present themselves. This attitude will undoubtedly lead to his career skyrocketing further, continually introducing him to new audience segments, all owing to the fact he’s a natural-born disruptor.
