Album Spotlight: Khaled Ali - 'Chalet 5'

At a time when regional mainstream pop remains largely shaped by established names, Egyptian singer-songwriter Khaled Ali is carving out space for a newer generation. Moving from Alexandria’s early rap circles into a guitar-driven pop sound, Ali’s evolution is rooted in a desire to make contemporary Egyptian youth heard on their own terms.

After a string of sporadic singles over the past year, Ali has released his debut EP, Chalet 5, named after the seaside chalet where the record was filmed and finalised. Created closely with producer Bashmohannad, the EP takes a freestyle-like approach to songwriting, a sensibility Ali carried over from his rap days, with lyrics and live guitar arrangements taking shape alongside each other in the studio. The result is an intimate, cohesive record that moves from the romantic longing of ‘Banadeek’ to the reflective closure of ‘Salam’, tracing the messier terrain of relationships, heartbreak and self-discovery.

In this episode of Album Spotlight, we sit down with Khaled Ali to unpack the making of Chalet 5, his collaborative dynamic with Bashmohannad, and the process of finding the EP’s guitar-led sound. He also shares his take on the state of mainstream pop and why he thinks younger artists should be taking up more space within it.

يتحدث المغني المصري خالد علي عن مرحلة جديدة في مسيرته الموسيقية، انتقل خلالها من ارتباطه القديم بموسيقى الراب إلى اكتشاف عالم البوب وتقديم موسيقى تعكس ما يريد التعبير عنه اليوم.

ويشير خالد إلى أن علاقته بالراب بدأت في الإسكندرية، عندما كان عدد مستمعي هذا النوع من الموسيقى محدودًا، وكان يحضر تجمعات الراب ويشارك هذا الشغف مع دائرة صغيرة من المستمعين. خلال العامين الأخيرين، بدأ اهتمامه يتجه أكثر نحو البوب، خاصة مع اكتشافه لأغانٍ قديمة لفنانين مثل عامر منيب، وهو ما فتح أمامه مساحة جديدة للتجربة.

وفي مشروعه الأخير، تعاون خالد مع باش مهند، حيث حددا الاتجاه الموسيقي للمشروع منذ البداية. ويقول إن ترتيب الأغاني يحمل قصة متسلسلة تبدأ من "بناديك" و"ليلة"، وصولًا إلى "قلّابة" و"انتي قلبتي القصة" و"سلام"، لتتطور الأحداث والمشاعر من أغنية إلى أخرى.

كما شهد المشروع تجربة مختلفة في طريقة الكتابة والتلحين، إذ كان باش يعزف على الجيتار بينما يكتب خالد الكلمات بالتزامن مع ظهور اللحن. ويرى خالد أن هذا المشروع منحه فرصة لتجربة أشياء جديدة لم يكن يقدمها من قبل.

وبالنسبة لخالد، فإن انتشار البوب بين جيل الشباب اليوم يمثل مساحة مهمة للتعبير، بعدما كان هذا النوع من الموسيقى مرتبطًا بشكل أكبر بنجوم البوب المعروفين. ويؤكد أن الجيل الجديد بحاجة إلى أن يتحدث عن الحب والعلاقات والمشكلات التي يعيشها، "بصوتنا نحن"، وأن تكون الموسيقى انعكاسًا لتجاربهم وطريقتهم الخاصة في التعبير.
