8 Bars Episode Three: Perrie

SceneNoise series, 8 Bars, spotlights 8 young Egyptian rappers breaking through one of the most chaotic, exciting scenes in the region, talking everything from beefs and branding, to entourages and origins. Episode three sees the fearless Perrie step into the spotlight.

For many music fans in Egypt, Perrie first burst on the scene almost a year ago with her viral hit, ‘Shigella’, a diss track of sorts that took aim at a certain tone-deaf song, ‘Salmonella’, from Egyptian influencer, Tameem Younes. Perrie’s story, however, predates that by almost a decade.

Having initially got to grips with her musicality as a singer, Perrie first dared to try her hand at rapping in 2019, releasing her first track, the English-language ‘Kendrick Says’, in May of that year - a piece that she produced, mixed and mastered herself. Determined to transfer her emerging rhyming skills to Arabic, she set out to refine her mother tongue and hasn’t looked back since.

A rare example of a female rapper breaking through the ceiling on Egypt’s rap scene, she has gone on to work with the likes of producer, Wezza Montaser, collaborated with shaabi legend, Ortega, and counts Abyusif as something of a mentor. It’s been a brief but memorable ride for the Egyptian-Moroccan, but one that’s still at its beginning.
