The Saudi Ministry of Culture has recently inaugurated a musical heritage centre in Jeddah named after late Saudi composer Tariq Abdulhakim, in celebration of the kingdom’s vibrant musical landscape.
Situated at the historical area of Al-Balad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tariq Abdulhakim Center houses a museum honouring the legacy of its namesake, who was the founder of the Saudi military band and played a pivotal role in shaping the musical identity of the kingdom. The museum showcases a collection of Abdulhakim’s personal belongings such as costumes, musical notes, photographs and posters, as well as interviews and footage of his live performances. The centre also features a specialised research unit and a music archive housing an extensive collection, including books, music scores, recordings and traditional Saudi instruments.
In addition to preserving the history of Saudi music, the Tariq Abdulhakim Center will host regular performances and festivals to showcase regional rising talents. The venue will also serve as an educational hub, offering various workshops, seminars and interactive programs which focus on exploring the evolution of Saudi music.
