The 25th release of Palestine’s prolific digitial record label-cum hip-hop-collective, BLTNM, comes in the form of the Haifa-based PNGWNG Cru. Written by PNGWNG’s Bassem Bahouth, Masa2 el 6arab is a four-track EP drowning in flash floods of autotune, yeezus-esque experimental beats and an old school R&B flow that solidifies them at the forefront of the Arabic trap movement.
The EP’s glitchy, corrugated discharge is contrasted with emotional lyrical themes of heartbreaks and failed relationships. However, Masa2 el 6arab’s melancholic verses could do without the continuous interjections of the crew’s name uttered throughout, a la DJ Khaled, although at least the enunciation is clear now - it’s pronounced ‘penguin’ if you were wondering.
PNGWNG Cru came in to prominence in 2018 following a collaborative EP with Paris-based collective, LTR Worldwide, and followed it up with a string of hit singles as well as featuring on Nowness premiered video, 'One Night in Isreal', by British director, Yoni Lappin.
