You just can’t keep these two off our screens and out of our earphones. The dynamic duo of Alexandria natives, Afroto and Batistuta, have been as individually prolific as any trap artist in Egypt this year and the twosome’s latest collaboration might just be their best yet.
While we’ve seen Batistuta produce for Afroto before, this time he steps from behind the desk and leaves production duties to Rashed Muzik – a man that both artists know all too well.
With the spotlight shared in both track and video, ‘Mazalat’ (parachutes) is a winding trap banger of ebb and flow, that shifts in pace, as the two rappers assert their dominance on the scene – they’re flying high like mazalat…see what they did there? Don’t read too much into the metaphor though, because well, parachutes eventually hit the ground.
Directed by Abdelrahman Hany, the video keeps things simple and on-theme. Afroto and Batistuta stand in the desert on what seems like the border of a city, its buildings barely visible in the background. The two seem to have dropped down from somewhere, with parts of the video showing them with parachutes still attached to their back – the only thing that’s seemingly keeping them both from jumping through your screen to deliver their bars.
The track comes as a welcome boost to the growing scene and genre during a time when Egypt’s other trap heavy-hitters have maintained a relatively low-key existence amidst the pandemic. It also satisfies that very particular yearning for big-name collaborations, of which there certainly aren’t enough of on Egypt’s rap scene.
