Rust Tackle Homesickness and Alienation on Latest Single ‘Ghurba’

Striking a balance between electronic experimentation and classical Arabic vocal traditions, Lebanese-Syrian electro-tarab duo Rust have returned with ‘Ghurba’, a bittersweet single that captures the disorienting weight of exile and displacement.

Opening with atmospheric soundscapes overlaid with glitchy, chopped vocals, the track anchors itself around a driving central synth line. Beneath Petra Hawi’s microtonal vocal runs, spacious percussive elements pulsate alongside bright synth trills, adding a light, curious contrast to the track’s weightier themes. Hawi’s precise vocal control gives life to Nada Elshabrawy’s poignant lyrics, which detail the grief of yearning for a home that has changed beyond recognition.

Directed by Maher Ben Hamed, the accompanying music video translates this thematic alienation into a vivid visual experience. Set in a studio filled with vibrant set design and dynamic projections, the duo maintain a deadpan, calm presence against the shifting colors, presenting a subtle parallel to the emotional detachment at the heart of the track.
