Lebanese Artist LAÏ Goes Grunge on New Single 'TESHREEN'

LAÏ is an artist who wears a different persona with each release, refusing to sit still with one sound. Her discography moves from R&B and soul in her early days to indie-pop and even rage trap, if her recent collaboration with Husayn is anything to go by. Yet beneath the sonic experimentation, there is one thing that remains consistent about LAÏ’s aesthetic: a fierce energy of feminine rage that anchors her hyperstylised narratives influenced by internet subcultures, gaming and horror.

Fresh off her debut album, ‘MALAL’, the Cairo-based Lebanese singer-songwriter is now taking up grunge on her new single, ‘TESHREEN’, expanding her anti-pop sound into a darker alternative territory. Co-produced by Egyptian metal producer ARABY, the track features a mix of 90s punk attitude with heavy metal influences. Amid aggressively loud rhythms of distorted guitars and crashing drums, LAÏ’s haunting vocals languidly float in a haze of melancholy, drifting between melodic and glitchy textures, as if mirroring her lyrical descent into heartbreak, nostalgia, and temporal disorientation.

The track doesn’t aim to shock as much as it reveals another facet of LAÏ’s restless creativity, a continuation of her ongoing journey to carve her own path unconcerned with establishing a certain sonic identity.
