Only two years into its brief life, Egyptian label, Sound of Noize, can rightly claim to be one of the most unique arrivals on the local music scene. Built on the notion of creating a space for the kind of maniacal, left-field artists that can often be shunned by more established circles, Sound of Noize really is the label that “champions music others won’t.”

Taking experimentation into the darkest corners of music, there are few libraries that boast the same kind of eclecticness that of Sound of Noize as they continue to call on a seeming conveyor belt of young talent. One of the latest comes in the form of Darb, who debuted on the label in January with ‘wrshan’, an energetic, shaabi-tinted track that harks back to the hardcore breakbeat scene of the 90s. On his latest release, ‘Ka3b’, Darb takes a diversion and wanders into an atmospheric, ambient soundscape that pops and crackles with sporadic layers of tabla and sagat - Middle Eastern finger cymbals that can be readily found as part of any bellydancer’s armory. It’s a unique meld of east and west, that surprises winds and surprises - a fitting addition to the Sound of Noize’s released and a showcase of Darb’s own versatility.
