Following his unyielding curiosity, Abd El Fattah Grini’s career has been centred around embracing sounds and musical ideas and appropriations from every corner of the world. The Moroccan pop star first came to notoriety through his cover of the Indian song ‘Jabra Fan’ which he sang in his Moroccan dialect.

Meanwhile, in his cross-cultural collaboration with Latin pop star Marc Anthony in the song ‘Grini & Jamila - La Gozadera (Arabic Version)’ he combines Arabic textures such as a mizmar with a Latin pop instrumental to create a track with upwards of 8 million views from fans across the world. Through his work, Grini has established a unique lyrical style in which he adapts Arabic singing to music from around the world.

Since the start of his career, the singer has gone on to achieve significant milestones in his career, reaching over 62 million views on YouTube, and being awarded ‘Best International Artist’ at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2011.

In this interview, Grini talks to SceneNoise’s Heba Radi about his ongoing discovery of new sounds from around the world, and his take on music emerging from Egypt’s diverse soundscapes.
