Spotify to Label AI-Generated Artist Profiles With New Badges in Sep
The new AI Persona badge is concerned with who an artist claims to be, rather than whether AI was involved in producing a track.
Spotify is introducing a new AI Persona badge to artist profiles, giving listeners a clearer way to tell when the person behind an artist profile may not be a real human.
Set to roll out from mid-September this year, the feature is concerned with who an artist claims to be, rather than whether AI was involved in producing a track. It’s also Spotify’s latest attempt to bring more transparency to an increasingly AI-shaped music ecosystem. The badge will appear on artist profiles, in search and across track rows in playlists, signalling that an artist’s public identity may have been generated using AI rather than representing an actual person.
The move comes as Spotify doubles down on what it calls ‘Artist Identity & Trust’, following the launch of tools including Verified by Spotify, AI Credits, SongDNA, and Artist Profile Protection earlier this year. While those features focus on establishing who is behind an artist and how AI has been used in the creation of music, the new badge addresses a slightly different question: is there actually a human behind the artist identity?
Artists will be able to voluntarily disclose that their profile represents an AI Persona through Spotify for Artists. However, the app won’t rely solely on self-reporting; its review teams will also assess profiles whose public identities, including names and imagery, appear to represent photorealistic AI-generated people.
For listeners, the distinction will also affect what Spotify recommends. Music from AI Persona profiles will, by default, be excluded from Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations. Users can still encounter and listen to these artists, but their music will not appear in personalised recommendations unless the listener has actively followed or saved the artist.
The move ultimately points to a changing definition of artist identity in streaming. As AI makes it increasingly easy to create not only music but entire personas around it, Spotify is placing more emphasis on helping listeners understand what, and who, they are actually engaging with.
The question now is how effectively a badge can keep up with an ecosystem where the boundary between human artist, AI-assisted creator and entirely synthetic persona is becoming increasingly difficult to see.
