London-based Egyptian singer Layal reflects on her soulful influences in her latest groovy single ‘Lost Case’, boasting a funk-heavy instrumental with some cheeky lyrics, which draws influences from the likes of Jorja Smith, Joy Crookes and Mahalia. This marks Layal’s fourth single this year, showcasing her broad diversity whether with psychedelic overtones, debuting her Arabic single, or simply her usual funk-filled tunes.
‘I wanted this to be a fun song, like an anthem for those who relate,” Layal tells SceneNoise. “‘Lost Case’ is a song about escaping the heartbreaker before he strikes. It’s playful and sweet, although the lyrics are not.”
The single kicks off with a dulcet guitar riff and a stank bassline as Layal wastes no time to enter the mix. The drums resemble a mix of boom-bap with early 2000s RnB rhythms, and raw-sounding percussions. The guitar and bass swirl around each other as the track goes by, creating an unorthodox call-and-response effect.
Following a string of triumphant releases and performances across the summer, Layal has been steadily on the rise in the music scene, both in London and Cairo, with another release scheduled before the end of the year. As for what the future holds, Layal will keep her focus on a small project for Spring 2023 - one that she says will completely capture her ethos.
